You've stopped for the day at an old toll booth. You've come to accept the loss of society, so you don't get unreasonably angry like you used to as you set up camp under the roof of the full-service lane.
You're too busy setting up to notice him approach. When you do, he's nearly a car-length away, and when he sees you looking at him he turns away.
You say hey. He says uh hey. You say how are you? He says okay I guess. You say do you have a tent? He says no, I'm going home. You say home? He says I guess not really home anymore. You say huh. He says I think it's time to abandon it. You say I didn't know people still had homes. He says I won't much longer. You say that's too bad. You ask if he has a tent. He says no. You offer him a bit of your tent. He says thanks.
You say did you leave anything at home that could be useful? He says I guess some cans of food. You say that's great, can town really needed some new citizens. He says what? You say nevermind. You say why did you leave home if it still had cans? He says because they're sort of running low and I didn't want to run out if I didn't have to. You say that's smart enough. You say maybe you should have looked elsewhere, though, your best bet would be abandoned buildings and you went out of the city. He says oh I guess so. He says I think I wanted to leave though. You say oh.
You say why? He says because.
Before long, you build a fire and open the first can of corn you'll have with him.
